If you arrive in Oman it’s because of business or holiday. In both cases the fundamental component is the traditional cuisine, which absolutely must be experimented in ll its facets.
I would recommend some of the restaurants, in my opinion, you must try in Muscat, especially if you have only few days to spend in town.
- TURKISH HOUSE: very good turkish cuisine, delicious juices, I suggest the lemon-mint flavour, lentil soup (for lunch), hummus as starter (sauce made of chickpeas) and mutabbal (sauce made of eggplant). Combine everything with the arabic bread and enjoy a very good Hammour (local fish similar to snapper fish) and prawns. In addition I suggest to order the rocket salad as side dish.
- KARJEEN: arabic local cuisine, that includes many kinds of soups, salads, mix grill and the traditional dish Shuwa, marinated meat with spices like cardamom turmeric and and red peppers, garlic and vinegard. Everything is wrapped in banana leaves and placed in ovens. In some villages the meat is well cooked for 48 hours and in the desert cooking takes place in the sand. If you miss italian pizza, here you can order that one cocked by the Italian chef Fabio.
- MASHAKIQ-FOOD STREET: for those who love adventure and have only few rials to spend I highly recommend the experience of skewers of chicken, beef, squid and prawns, that you can find in spots like Qurum, the Wave or Al Hail. They are quite famous so you will see many cars waiting for their turn. If you want to risk even more try the hot sauce.
Don’t forget to try the omani coffe: it’s prepared with roasted coffe beans enriched with cardamom.
